The third installment in the massively popular film series based on Capcom's zombie horror/science fiction games, Resident Evil: Extinction brings the world to an end, not with a whimper but a bang, as Milla Jovovich's Alice pits her bio-organic superskills against armies of the undead in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. Also on hand is a more grown-up version of the games' Claire Redfield (played by Heroes' Ali Larter), who leads a convoy of humans (among them Resident Evil vets Oded Fehr and Mike Epps, who reprise their roles as Carlos and LJ, as well as newcomers Ashanti and Spencer Locke) in search of sanctuary; meanwhile, sinister Umbrella Corporation scientist Dr. Sam Isaacs (Iain Glen) seeks a cure for the zombie virus outbreak via Alice's blood, which he taps via a lab full of clones. Subtlety has never been the Resident Evil series' strong suit, but it's hard to argue against Extinction's breakneck pace and impressive CG special effects; director Russell Mulcahy (the Highlander series) lends a lot of verve to the proceedings, and the script by producer Paul W.S. Anderson pulls in agreeable touches from The Road Warrior and Day of the Dead. A hit during the summer of 2007, Extinction should please series devotees and action-horror fans alike; the DVD includes commentary by Mulcahy, Anderson, and co-producer Jeremy Bolt, as well as several making-of featurettes, and a glimpse at the next entry in the Resident Evil franchise, the CG-only Degeneration. -- Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars Now she can burn birds...with a thought, it cant get anyworse.   January 1, 2009

First she could make your nose bleed with a thought(apocalypse), now she uses her powers to burn birds. And apparently she can be turned on and off with a switch. This one is longer and more boring, and the clones at the end, that was even worse. This is not resident evil, this is a bad mix between mad max and whatever they could think of. Milla is a good actress, but this Alice character is more robot than human. 28 weeks later and Warning sign are better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Return to Form!   December 28, 2008
DVD Frenzy
After the disappointing second movie outing for this console game, I was expecting the third instalment to be a disaster of epic proportions and signal the franchise's demise. Wow, was I surprised! This is a really great action movie. The set pieces are all cool. The way they further develop the character of the lead is interesting. The special effects and story both bring something new to the franchise.

There were a few minor niggles: the Vegas location could have been exploited for more; the super zombies were a little easy to kill with a knife to the throat(?); the climax battle was a little short. But all in all, I'll enjoy watching this again - always the sign of a good movie experience.

3 out of 5 stars Actually felt somewhat like the real Resident Evil   December 22, 2008

I was introduced to Resident Evil by the original games...later they decided to make films BASED on the games, but they were not ever all that great.

I saw the first one, and though it had some interesting scenes of how people met their doom. I didnt really like it. It paled in comparison to the games. And the games are far superior in story and in horror and still are to this day (resident evil 4 and 5 as the latest and greatest prime examples of this)

Anyways, i even tried watching the second RE film, but that was just so embarrassingly lame, i couldnt watch it all the way through...it might of turned out to be an okay movie, but at the time, i really wasnt impressed at all, i was NOT entertained. but i might go back and check that one out, just to give it another chance.

But ya, so far, i never really cared much for the hollywood film adaptations. Until now, because RE-Extinction was actually done in way that does the games some justice, and honors the tradition of the game series way better.

Of course the story and things are still just BASED on the games, you dont get a plot by plot similarity at all. But its done well this time around. And i think the monster at the end was impressive. They did a good job representing that thing.

Its not really the best acted movie. But it kept me entertained and interested. The part with how they fight off the hundreds of zombie crows was awesome.

And the story kind of touches on stuff that was kind of a mystery in the first film and uncovers some 'secrets' in ways.
So im actually interested in seeing whats next for this film 'franchise'.

I think its worth buying a used copy on amazon for cheap.

not a bad movie.

4 out of 5 stars Great Deal   December 21, 2008

Great deal for the money. As for the movies I think extinction was the best one.

5 out of 5 stars Resident Evil in HD glory   December 17, 2008
Darren Dodson (Hoboken, NJ)
This review is for the HD content, not the movie actor's quality.

RE 1 transfer to HD is excellent! The sound quality is outstanding!
RE 2 & 3 suffer a bit of the over darkening and slightly lower quality. Sound is above par, but below the quality of the first.
