Stunning computer-generated special effects are the main selling point of Dragon Wars: D-War, a Korean-made fantasy about ancient monsters wreaking havoc in modern Los Angeles. The complex plot, based on legend, pits an evil serpent and its demonic army against a young woman (Amanda Brooks) who is the reincarnation of a young woman imbued with the heaven-sent power to transform the creature into an all-powerful dragon. Jason Behr (The Grudge) is the reporter who discovers that he too is a reincarnated warrior bound to prevent Brooks and her power from falling into the wrong hands. The elaborate premise isn't helped by the script, which delivers absurd dialogue and situations with child-like naivete; thankfully, the presence of Robert Forster (as another reincarnated hero) and solid actors like Elizabeth Pena, The Office's Craig Robinson, and Chris Mulkey, help smooth over the frequent moments of unintentional humor. But this won't matter much to fantasy fans and (especially) younger viewers, who will tune in for the film's riot of special effects; director Shim Hyung-rae and his talented team offer scene after scene of exceptional CGI creations, most notably a aerial dogfight between helicopters and winged lizards in the skies above downtown L.A., and a climactic battle which makes good on the title's promise. The DVD includes a making-of featurette which outlines Shim's four-year struggle to complete the project, as well as storyboard galleries and an animatics display. -- Paul Gaita

2 out of 5 stars Dragon Wars Blu-ray   November 2, 2008
Andrew Bovell (Jamaica, NY)
Dragon Wars - D-War [Blu-ray] Though not one of the best movies on dragons I collected this movie for entertainment value and the fact that it originated in the Orient.

1 out of 5 stars WOW   October 26, 2008
Larry J. Bogatz (Ca, USA)
Not wow in a good way... I mean, yes, there are good special effects... But seriously, I have NEVER in ALL MY LIFE seen a movie with a worse script! Oh my god, its the Imoogi! Run to another place, somehow outrun a giant snake-dragon and just sit around with some doctor who makes things float with his mind (good for him) and, just when he is done, the Imoogi shows up IN THE HOUSE and kills him... and yet... somehow... THEY ARE ABLE TO SURVIVE. The romance in this movie is just as obvious and terrible. "I bought you some new clothes" *make-out-sesion*... Oh my god... save your money and get a good movie.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie ever!   October 21, 2008

Alright so everything's corny. The story seemed rushed and very predictable. Typical conflicts and quotes you see from so many movies. You have computer animations mixed with power ranger effects. This movie is not worth the time. Somehow the main female character is so easy she'd kiss any guy within a day and the department of defense keeps shotguns in their drawers.

2 out of 5 stars waay over done and not thought out 1st   October 11, 2008
AnimeGod981 (MA)
Disappointed.... this is how i felt. The small things picked at me. Like back in ancient times how did these troops have rocket blasters strapped to dinosaurs when the Asians had swords and a cannon or 2 at most? And in present day why aren't the military aiming for the weak points of the dragons? We all know we can't pierce the scales sooo aim for the eyes and in the mouth morons! Not to mention the military didn't even evacuate the city before sending in tankers and helicopters to rain down a shower of bullets which were carelessly and uselessly fired at scales the army knew was harder then diamonds! This movie could have been so great if the writers thought it out before throwing it together. It could have had less comedy and brought up a level in the seriousness of the situation. The events were serious but it was depicted as 1970s comicbookish
