Product Description Brutal cold forces two antarctic explorers to leave their team of sled dogs behind as they fend for their survival. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 09/01/2006 Starring: Paul Walker Jason Biggs Run time: 120 minutes Rating: Pg
Amazon.com Despite a likable cast of humans, it's the canine stars who steal the show in Eight Below, a terrific live-action adventure in the time-honored Disney tradition. Based on a true story that was previously filmed (much differently) as the 1983 Japanese hit Antarctica, this above-average family film takes place in 1993 and focuses on a dog-sled guide at an Antarctic research station (Paul Walker) who is forced by a severe storm to abandon eight beloved sled dogs for the duration of a harsh Antarctic winter. Left to fend for themselves, the rugged and resourceful dogs encounter danger at every turn, surviving for nearly six months while Walker and his closest colleagues (engagingly played by Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood, and American Pie's Jason Biggs) join forces to mount a daring rescue mission. Having endured similarly extreme conditions on his 1993 film Alive, director Frank Marshall brings an abundance of natural splendor (and minimum use of digital wizardry) to spectacularly arctic locations in Norway, Greenland and Canada, and Walker (star of The Fast and the Furious) lends an amiable sincerity to his compassionate role. For most viewers, however, it's the remarkable dogs (six Siberian huskies and two malamutes) who make Eight Below so thoroughly entertaining. It's not quite an instant family classic, but it comes pretty doggone close. --Jeff Shannon

Celebrates the Human-Animal Bond December 28, 2008 Jan Peczkis (Chicago IL, USA) If you love animals, or even if you see them as more than just conveniences for humans, this DVD is for you. A group of sled dogs are left "temporarily", and it turns out that this abandonment may be forever. The higher-ups don't see the dogs as anything worth making a special trip to recover. The sledders do. If nothing else, the dogs have saved their lives on more than one occasion in the treacherous Antarctic environment. To arrange a rescue trip itself becomes an adventure. If it takes place, will it possibly be in time to save the dogs? The dogs have their own adventures. They have to contend with cold, starvation, injuries, and being chained in one place. They also have to deal with cracking snow and a ferocious sea lion. How long can they survive? Will they ever see the humans again?

There is so much to talk about with this fantastic movie. The acting, scenery, the dog training, the music and the story itself. I don't know why it took me so long to see it. I am not a major dog loving fan, but these beautiful dogs were definately the stars of the movie. They are magnificent and steel every scene they're in. Paul Walker did an excellent job as Jerry Shepard who takes scientists around Antarctic. A storm rolls in and the dogs are left at the base camp chained so they won't break free and get lost. Now the storm will keep help from getting to them until Spring. There are some definate tear starting moments and I won't give anything away, but while this is a Disney movie, it is a very beautiful and powerful one. It's something that will appeal to people of all age groups and I highly recommend everyone sees it. Like I said earlier, I don't know why it took me so long to watch it, but now that I have, I'm really glad that I have.
Has heart. September 10, 2008 ADRIENNE MILLER (TENNESSEE) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Eight Below starring Paul Walker is a special and inspiring film. The 8 dogs in this film are so cute and such talented actors, lol. Jason Biggs plays another goofball, that dude needs a new nitch! Walker is such a babe, he is excellent in this moving drama. Some parts of the film are a bit slow but I enjoyed this Disney flick pretty much the whole way through. Check it out sometime!
